So I was reading the wikipedia entry for neo-soul and it had a link to this forum. It seems like a potentially high traffic generating link has no posts in it!

In that vain...what is neo-soul?

Ive always considered neo-soul to be any of the soulful current music by the likes of Alicia Keys, Lauren Hill, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Cody Chestnutt...and also the more cerebral breed of rap that makes insightful social and political statements..Kind of like soul in the old days before it was usurped by the record industry. The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Dead Prez, Fugees, Wyclef..

Its entirely possible that I am wrong in my categorization of the latter as Neo-Soul...but when compared to the crap that spews on the top 40 rap stations...it doesnt seem appropriate to put them into the same bucket.

Unfortunately those artists u mentioned are overlooked because the media tends to feed the minds that Top40 acts are all 'soul'.An artist like Jill Scott cant compete with the over exposure of the Rhianna's,Cassie's and Ciara's of the chart world.I know who I believe has the talent and for me its not the chart rubbish we have to suffer

A great album to search for from a few years back,which was pretty much one of the first 'Neo Soul'albums is the JAZZMATAZZ VOL 1 album,a great album from big Guru from Gangstarr,his side project Jazzmatazz.Very good album to get hold of
